Those pages will take you to discover the castles and fortresses built in the area of Tivoli and surroundings during a period of extensive fortification (during the 9th and 10th centuries AD), when the barbarian incursions forced the local inhabitants to move from the valleys to higher, more easily defendable land.
About 6 miles from Tivoli towards Vicovaro, on the right hand, is a ruined tower of the 13th century called Saccomuro (or Sacco Muro). You can see the ruins of the castle with its polygonal walls which probably mark the site of some small town dependent on ancient Tibur at an early period of the empire.
